Enrique Lihn, author of many novels and collections of poetry, was born in Santiago, Chile in 1929. Over the course of his career he received fellowships from the Guggenheim Foundation and UNESCO, as well as several awards, including the 1966 Casa de las Américas prize for poetry and the Pedro de Oña prize. Lihn died in Santiago in 1988. A posthumous volume of his poetry, Figures of Speech: Poems by Enrique Lihn, was published in 2006.
