Writers' Guidelines

The American Poetry Review publishes original poetry, literary criticism, interviews, essays and social commentary. Please use the following guidelines when submitting manuscripts for consideration.

  1. Manuscripts should be typewritten or computer-printed on white, 8-1/2" X 11" paper. Prose should be double-spaced. Please send no more than five poems at a time.
  2. Manuscripts should be addressed to "The Editors" and mailed to 1700 Sansom Street, Suite 800, Philadelphia, PA 19103. Do not send manuscripts by fax or E-mail.
  3. Each manuscript must be accompanied by a self-addressed stamped envelope. (International submissions should be accompanied by Universal Postal Union International Response Coupons.) No reply will be made to unaccepted manuscripts that are not accompanied by sufficient return postage.
  4. Keep a copy of your manuscript and an accurate record of the date you mailed it.
  5. Do not send previously published material or material that is currently under consideration by another magazine or periodical. Please do not send work that is under consideration by APR to another magazine or periodical.
  6. Our reporting time is approximately three months. Please do not inquire about the status of your manuscript unless more than three months have passed.
  7. Please do not send multiple submissions. Allow us to reply before you send more work.

All work submitted to APR is considered for publication in The American Poetry Review only.

Copyright: APR holds first serial rights for material that we publish. The copyright automatically reverts to the author upon publication. We do not require that material be copyrighted prior to submission.

Prizes: The Jerome J. Shestack Poetry Prizes of $1000 are awarded annually to each of two poets whose work has appeared in APR during the preceding calendar year.
